Dor e mobilidade do ombro

In this small publication I focus on the shoulder. In this context, it is considered as the set of joints, muscles and tendons that do more than hold the arm to the rest of the body.It is part of a structure that is connected not only to the arm, but also to the neck and dorsal area (to keep us only in the vicinity).

The importance and complexity of this structure is so great that in some cases it can even affect the lower limbs. It is also in this area that some of the disabling pains are registered, caused for example by repetitive movements, trauma or other structural alterations.I am not going to mention in this context the different anatomical parts or the most recurrent pathologies, instead emphasizing the need for a global analysis (of the body and habits) for a more effective treatment.

The 'structural' shoulder

We can almost imagine this structure as a crane with cables and pulleys, in which the main cables originate in the spine and pass through the neck, chest and dorsal area. In this way, balance, or even better, fluidity, has an additional relevance. Any alteration (whether injury, tension or other) in the referred areas will limit the mobility of the shoulder and arm. Therefore, in addition to examining the shoulder and neighboring areas, it is necessary to check whether there are changes in the rest of the body (visible or subjective), so that the treatment is more effective. For example, a change in the jaw, hip, knee or ankle can unbalance the rest of the body and, if it does not adapt, it can cause discomfort in other areas.

Joint work

Analyzing together with the person the history of this pain, the felt experience, expectations, signs and symptoms, even if not apparently related, is particularly relevant. Sometimes, relieving or adjusting an area of the body (or even the type of activities) may be enough to set up a simpler process with lasting effects.

Equally or more important than therapy in the clinic (for example, Bowen therapy) is the work carried out by the person, which includes carrying out sets of adapted activities (physical exercise or daily tasks), setting goals and recording changes. and better body awareness. In this way, it is possible to record the sensations (pleasant or unpleasant) in the body and how they translate into an improvement in personal well-being and lifestyle changes.
