Narrative of a body

The concept of narrativism in the context of the experience of pain.

Some authors refer to the idea that each person builds their life story, a narrative. As if it were a personal biography, they tell their story and their experiences, and thus define themselves as people.

However, there are other authors who, whether due to lack of memory, the existence of the subconscious or because not all of us have the ability to be writers, refute this idea as being too strict.

What we can say is that we have our history and our experiences, with several remarkable moments, but we are not always able to make sense of the effect they had on our lives. The story is not always linear and can undergo creative changes (either by being forgotten in a deep drawer or by being embellished to add more interest). Also there are things that change in form or in degree of importance over time, such as our consciousness.more

In the case of pain, especially chronic pain, sometimes we need help to understand that pain is part of the story but doesn't have to define the person.

This help can come in the form of knowledge, or medication (it's not worth talking about other drugs that end up doing worse and transforming a normal narrative into a horror movie) that alleviates the pain and gives us a clearer vision of what there is something beyond that unpleasant feeling.

This help helps us find something that challenges us and makes us evolve to find another path.

- new challenges mess with the brain and the neuronal part- one disability can hide another, and solving each one of them helps to gradually untie the "knots"

- the recording of sensations helps to memorize and monitor the situation (either with a diary or with drawings)

- physical, emotional and mental exercises help maintain movement and regenerative capacity

- giving time is important, as not everything has to make sense right away

- every person is different and has specific needs

- variability and diversity is important, whether in movement, socialization or food

- give new opportunities, current experience matters more than history or memory, as these can be adulterated

- consistent practice, with mental support, leads to better integration
